Interstitium Discovery Links Acupuncture to Body’s Circulatory System

Scientists have uncovered a new network of connective tissue that may act as a third circulatory system, expanding the classic view that only the lymphatic and cardiovascular systems move fluid. The discovery emerged when researchers examined tattoo skin biopsies and found ink particles migrating into an interstitial space beneath the dermis. This hidden channel links the skin to the fascia.

The interstitium, a vast network of spaces between cells, allows fluids, cells and molecules to travel between organs before re-entering the lymphatic or blood systems. Cooper, an Ohio State associate professor, noted that the pathway mirrors traditional Chinese medicine meridians, where acupuncture needles stimulate fluid flow. The finding could explain how acupuncture alleviates pain and inflammation.

Beyond pain, the interstitium may influence cancer metastasis, diabetes, and gut health, as both healthy and malignant cells move through it. Researchers injected dye into forearm acupuncture points and observed slow migration along a meridian, confirming that the network channels fluids rather than veins. This insight opens new avenues for drug delivery and diagnostic imaging.

The discovery reshapes biomedical research and could impact medical device markets, from diagnostic scanners to targeted drug carriers. Companies developing interstitial imaging technologies may see increased demand, while firms already producing acupuncture equipment could leverage the scientific backing to expand their product lines. Investors will watch how the interstitium translates into commercial opportunities.
