Midjourney Unveils Full-Body Ultrasonic Scanner That Scans in 60 Seconds

Midjourney, the company behind the popular AI image generator, has announced a dramatic pivot into medical hardware with its Scanner device. The ultrasonic system can map an entire human body in just 60 seconds—nearly a hundred times faster than traditional MRI machines that require 60-90 minutes. This marks the launch of Midjourney Medical, the company's first hardware product that seems unrelated to its existing AI imaging tools.

The scanner works by submerging users in water on a platform that moves at 2 inches per second through a ring containing half a million ultrasonic emitters. Each emitter sends and receives sound waves, creating a 3D map of your body down to a fraction of a millimeter. Midjourney compares the technology to dolphin echolocation, surrounding subjects with what it calls half a million tiny dolphins from every angle.

Butterfly Network provides the ultrasound-on-chip technology through an exclusive licensing deal signed in November 2025. Ahmad Abbas, who previously worked on Apple's Vision Pro, leads the hardware development. The company plans to open its first spa location in San Francisco next year, followed by FDA approval and expanded rollout.

Midjourney aims to deploy 50,000 scanners globally by 2031. The company believes early detection through rapid full-body scanning could prevent 30 percent of deaths and slash healthcare costs by 50 percent. Whether this ambitious timeline translates to clinical reality remains uncertain, but the technology represents a bold expansion beyond AI art generation.
