Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made an unannounced visit to Israel on Monday, meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz. The trip came a day after Donald Trump publicly endorsed Netanyahu, who faces a tough election campaign on Oct. 27. The Trump administration has grown frustrated with failed diplomatic efforts to end the war on Iran, with Trump threatening new strikes.
Hegseth also visited U.S. troops under Central Command, as the U.S. prepares new strike plans for Iran. Analysts suggest a renewed attack is likely, with Raz Zimmt of the Institute for National Security Studies noting, "It's a matter of when the war restarts, not if." Netanyahu, trailing in polls, urged voters to support him, claiming Trump wants him to "finish the job once and for all.".
