A 20-year-old Haitian immigrant was struck and killed by a truck on I-70 in Springfield, Ohio, after growing despondent over an ankle monitor. Pierre Damas Bel was a gifted student and soccer player who received the device not due to criminal charges, but because his Temporary Protected Status legal standing vanished. His father stated the monitor caused a dramatic change, saying, "Everything was fine with him before this happened.

They put an ankle monitor on him and everything changed." Bel had recently started at Wright State University and was co-captain of his high school soccer team. In a recent Instagram post, he expressed shame and humiliation, writing he came to the U.S. not to commit a crime. Immigration and Customs Enforcement fitted him with the monitor in July as an alternative to detention.

Gov. Mike De Wine called the death a "horrible, horrible tragedy," linking it to misguided deportation policies. His family believes the bullying related to the device led to his death.

ICE declined specific questions but stated monitors are an alternative to detention for those who fail to comply with court orders.
