Family members of Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, a Salvadoran man who died at a New Jersey immigration jail, are demanding an independent investigation, alleging he was denied proper medical care. Lopez-Cornejo, who family says was 39, was hospitalized Saturday after a "medical emergency" at Delaney Hall in Newark and died the same day. His mother stated he complained about not receiving regular medication for diabetes, high blood pressure, and seizures, and had reported losing feeling in half his face and arm.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) stated Lopez-Cornejo "received proper medical care and was seen by medical professionals." He had been held at the facility since June 18. At least 56 people have died in ICE custody during Trump's second term, and hundreds of detainees have sued over inadequate medical care. Delaney Hall has been the site of protests and hunger strikes over conditions.

Democratic politicians, including U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, have renewed calls to close the 1,000-bed facility, citing past deaths. Another detainee died in July after a seizure, and ICE did not report the death, aligning with a policy change regarding deaths within 30 days of release. Lopez-Cornejo's brother called for the release of medically vulnerable detainees and an independent state investigation into the "health crisis" at Delaney Hall.
