James Maynard of Oxford developed new techniques in analytic number theory, establishing bounds on prime gaps and proving the existence of infinitely many primes without certain digits, advancing the understanding of prime distribution. Maryna Viazovska of EPFL solved the sphere-packing problem in dimensions 8 and 24, a century-old question, using modular forms and Fourier analysis to construct optimal lattice packings.

The medals, often called mathematics' Nobel, recognize transformative work before age 40. Each winner receives a gold medal and 15,000 Canadian dollars.
