Evanston Mayor Wins Dem Nomination in Illinois House Race

Daniel Biss, mayor of Evanston, Illinois, won the Democratic nomination for the state's Ninth Congressional District, defeating more than a dozen candidates in a race dominated by debates over Israel policy. The Associated Press called the race on Tuesday, confirming Biss's victory in the contest to replace longtime Representative Jan Schakowsky.

Biss, a former state senator and mayor since 2021, positioned himself as a moderate on Israel, opposing unconditional U.S. aid while stopping short of calling Israel's actions in Gaza genocide. His campaign faced millions in spending from AIPAC-linked super PACs supporting rival Laura Fine, who took a more conservative stance on Israel. Another front-runner, Palestinian American Kat Abughazaleh, called for ending U.S. military support for Israel.

Biss's victory reflects the complex dynamics in a district with a significant Jewish population stretching from Chicago's Far North Side through Evanston to northwest suburbs. Voters cited his legislative experience and opposition to ICE activities in Illinois as deciding factors. Endorsed by Senators Tammy Duckworth and Elizabeth Warren, Biss enters the general election as the strong favorite against the Republican nominee in this heavily Democratic district.
