Representative Mike Lawler, a Republican seeking re-election in a swing district in New York, was backed by Representative Jared Golden, Democrat of Maine. Lawler is trying to fend off a challenge from Cait Conley, a Democrat, in a critical House swing district in New York.

Golden endorsed Lawler in an opinion piece for The Journal News, praising his bipartisanship. The endorsement is a boost for Lawler, whose district is in New York’s lower Hudson Valley. With Republicans’ approval ratings cratering nationwide, Lawler has been fighting for his political life in an increasingly bruising and expensive race against Conley.

Golden and Lawler are members of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus. As a Republican in a district that Kamala Harris narrowly won, Lawler has faced voters’ frustration over President Trump’s deportation agenda, tariffs and war with Iran. He has continued to hold regular town halls, despite protests.

In a statement, Lawler said it was an “honor and a privilege” to be endorsed by Golden. Hakeem Jeffries, the House minority leader, dismissed the endorsement as a “smoke-and-mirrors ploy.” Conley has attacked Lawler for not standing up to Trump.
