NY Republican Lawler faces self‑dealing scandal ahead of 2026 race

Republican Representative Mike Lawler of New York’s 17th district is battling a bruising re‑election campaign that Democrats view as a pickup target. A Politico report links his former firm, Checkmate Strategies, to more than $720,000 in fees paid by entities tied to his campaign, local GOP committees and two advocacy groups. Critics argue the arrangement creates a self‑dealing appearance as he seeks a second term.

The Orangetown and Rockland County Republican committees together contributed roughly $43,000 to Checkmate, while the congressional campaign paid another $88,000 in 2025‑26. watchdog group Battleground New York filed a complaint with the FEC, and the DCCC labeled Lawler a “corrupt self‑dealer.” Legal analysts note the payments comply with existing law but raise ethical red flags for donors.

Lawler’s spokesman, Chris Russell, says the former owner sold his stake for up to $50,000 in 2023 and that the congressman was “firewalled” from firm profits. House Ethics officials have not released the guidance Lawler received, fueling calls for stricter anti‑self‑dealing rules. The controversy adds fresh pressure to a race already defined by narrow margins in this swing district.
