Three news outlets — CNN, MSNBC and Politico — asked a federal court on Monday to extend their temporary access to the White House grounds while they continue litigation over a ban imposed by the Trump administration.

The outlets were barred from entry on Sept. 19 after President Trump cited their "constant 'reporting' FAKE NEWS!" in a social media post. Two days later, they sued in federal court in Washington. Judge Timothy J. Kelly ruled last week that the White House had not given proper notice and issued a two-week order restoring access, set to expire on Oct. 8.

In their filing, the outlets argued the ban violated their First Amendment rights and their ability to contest exclusion. They claimed Trump instituted the ban to punish negative reporting. The White House later sent letters citing professionalism concerns. The motion also highlighted that the temporary order did not explicitly restore their participation in pool coverage, critical for reporting on the president.

Over the past week, the five major networks suspended TV pool assignments to pressure the administration into fully reinstating CNN. Though the White House briefly relented, it blocked CNN from a pool assignment on Sept. 26. The outlets requested a court order preventing enforcement of the ban and ensuring equal access. A White House scheduling email on Sunday indicated CNN would receive a pool slot on Thursday.
