CIA Director Ratcliffe Visits Cuba Amid US Pressure

CIA Director John Ratcliffe made an unannounced visit to Cuba on Thursday, marking the highest-level appearance by a Trump administration official since the U.S. intensified its campaign against the Communist government. The Cuban government confirmed the trip, stating that Ratcliffe met with the nation's interior minister to discuss the "current situation" between the two nations. Havana officials used the meeting to assert that Cuba poses no threat to American national security.

This engagement occurs as the Trump administration seeks to force concessions from the island nation, primarily by targeting the Communist Party’s political control. Measures already implemented include cutting off foreign oil shipments, which has exacerbated Cuba’s economic crisis, and increasing U.S. military and intelligence reconnaissance flights around the island.

Diplomatic efforts have been led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has engaged in private talks with Cuban leaders, including Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez Castro. While Rubio has publicly suggested the U.S. might accept broad economic reforms, he recently expressed skepticism in a Fox News interview that the current regime would alter its trajectory, adding further complexity to the ongoing pressure campaign.
