A Cornell University fraternity ousted members days after a woman told the authorities in 2024 about being sexually assaulted, a national executive of the organization said Wednesday. Trey Robb, the interim executive director of Chi Phi’s national organization, said in a statement that the Cornell chapter had unanimously voted to dismiss the men three days after the woman gave her account to the police. The national group later expelled the men, as well.

“These actions went beyond anything the law or Cornell University required of us,” said Mr. Robb. The woman, identified only as Jane Doe, filed a lawsuit this month alleging she was sexually assaulted on campus in Ithaca, N.Y., and that the university and fraternity were negligent.

A person familiar with the matter said the Cornell chapter removed four men. Mr. Robb defended the fraternity’s response, stating, “As a private membership fraternity, Chi Phi acted within its own authority… to remove men suspected of betraying the values of our brotherhood.” The district attorney, Matthew Van Houten, reopened the inquiry but noted the woman’s 2024 statement did not allege she was drugged against her will or gang raped.

The lawsuit and revived inquiry have intensified scrutiny of Greek life at Cornell, where about one-third of undergraduates participate in fraternities and sororities. The Chi Phi chapter, founded in 1868, had faced campus discipline between 2018 and 2023.
