Trump's $4 Trillion 'Pax Silica' Fund Aims to Secure Global Supply Chains

The Trump administration announced plans for a $4 trillion voluntary consortium to invest in energy, minerals, and semiconductors, aiming to reduce global dependencies highlighted by the Iran conflict. The fund, building on the existing 'Pax Silica' initiative, will include countries like Singapore, the UAE, Qatar, and Sweden alongside the U.S., which will contribute $250 million. This effort seeks to create a secure global supply chain for critical goods, particularly semiconductors, amid concerns over Taiwan's role and China's export controls on rare earth minerals.

The consortium targets investments in ports, factories, and energy assets to keep these assets in trusted hands. While the fund's scale is significant, experts question how such a sum would materialize, given global FDI totaled only $1.6 trillion last year. Founding members include Japanese investment bank SoftBank and Singaporean fund Temasek, with combined assets exceeding $1 trillion.
