Thermos Recalls 8.2 Million Containers After Injuries From Forceful Stoppers

Thermos has voluntarily recalled roughly 8.2 million jars and bottles after customers reported that the stoppers violently ejected, striking them and causing injuries. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission lists 5.8 million Stainless King Food Jars and 2.3 million Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles as affected. Reports include 27 injuries, three permanent vision losses in the United States.

The recall follows a design flaw: stoppers lack pressure‑relief valves, so liquids left sealed for months can build pressure and launch the cap when opened. The affected models—SK3000, SK3020, and all SK3010—were sold for about $30 each between March 2008 and July 2024, according to the commission, in the U.S. market and across retailers.

Thermos responded with a statement pledging swift action and cooperation with the C.P.S.C. Customers must stop using the recalled items, submit claims online, and await replacements or new pressure‑relief stoppers. Deliveries may take seven to nine weeks, and refunds are unavailable. The company emphasizes no returns to stores to avoid further risk for safety today.

The recall also hits Thermos’ supply chain, with affected units produced in China and Malaysia and imported into the U.S. By July 2024, the company sold more than 8 million units nationwide, generating roughly $240 million in revenue. This incident may dent brand trust and trigger tighter scrutiny of pressure‑sealed containers in the consumer‑goods sector today.
