Tesla Semi's Price Edge Reshapes Electric Trucking Market

Tesla's Semi truck is gaining traction with California haulers who see a $290,000 price tag and 500-mile range as a sharp contrast to Daimler and Volvo electrics priced above $400,000. More than 1,200 Semis have been requested through state subsidy programs, and firms like King Fio Trucking have already placed orders for fleets.

The appeal goes beyond cost. Drivers report the Semi hauls loads up steep grades effortlessly, runs quietly, and lets air conditioning run without violating California idling rules near homes and schools. Heavy-duty diesel trucks generate 45 percent of road-based nitrogen oxide emissions, so wider adoption of battery power carries real environmental weight.

Volvo and Daimler dismiss the Semi as disruptive, though Volvo plans a longer-range model next year. Daimler cites charger infrastructure as a barrier. Tesla's Nevada assembly line aims for 50,000 trucks annually, which would generate tens of billions in revenue but remains a modest bet compared to Musk's self-driving ambitions.
