Gulf Airlines Cancel Thousands of Flights Amid Iran War

The war in Iran has forced Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad Airways to cancel over 52,000 flights since February 28, disrupting travel for an estimated six million passengers. The three carriers, which have built their success on Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi's strategic locations, now face their biggest crisis since the Covid-19 pandemic. The airspace closures have effectively paralyzed one of the world's busiest aviation hubs.

These Persian Gulf carriers carry about one in three people traveling from Europe to Asia and one in two from Europe to Australia. Last year, 227 million people flew to, from, or through the region. The financial impact extends beyond airlines to the broader economy, with tourism losses potentially reaching $56 billion this year depending on how long the conflict lasts. Hotels, restaurants, and other businesses that depend on international visitors have seen demand evaporate.

While the big three carriers have substantial cash reserves to weather the storm, smaller airlines and budget carriers may struggle more. Some industry experts predict airlines like British Airways, Lufthansa, and Qantas could benefit temporarily as travelers seek alternatives. However, the long-term recovery remains uncertain as the war's duration and impact on global travel patterns are still unknown.
