Google Wants Hollywood to Rethink Tech Fears

Google wants Hollywood to stop depicting technology as a countdown to catastrophe. The tech giant has commissioned “Sweetwater,” a short film starring Kyra Sedgwick that portrays AI as a comforting hologram of a dead movie star. The film is part of 100 Zeros, a new partnership between Google and Range Media Partners, which aims to shape how technology appears onscreen, experiment with emerging entertainment, and build talent relationships.

Jonathan Zepp, Google’s head of entertainment content and platforms, said technology is often misrepresented onscreen. The venture will launch microdramas on the Google TV streaming app in December, including “Dateable” from Mike Fleiss, creator of “The Bachelor.” These shows serve as testing grounds for AI production tools.

100 Zeros is smaller than Apple and Amazon’s Hollywood operations, but it reflects tech giants extending influence into storytelling. Hollywood has increasingly depicted technology dystopianly, as seen in recent shows and films. Researchers note that science fiction shapes public attitudes toward tech, and Google-backed Anthropic disclosed that its Claude chatbot sometimes mimicked evil AI from stories.

Google can push only so hard, as filmmakers resist creative meddling. Sedgwick acknowledged the venture is “self-serving, for sure.”
