Dua Lipa Sues Samsung Over Unauthorized Image Use

Pop star Dua Lipa has launched a $15 million federal lawsuit against Samsung, accusing the electronics giant of using her image on television packaging without authorization. Filed in California, the lawsuit claims Samsung infringed Lipa's copyright and trademark rights while violating her "right of publicity." The image, taken at a 2024 Austin music festival, appeared on TV boxes sold in the US since last year, with Lipa's legal team claiming the unauthorized use generated sales.

Lipa's lawyers revealed Samsung rebuffed her repeated demands to stop using the image. Court submissions included photos showing a cardboard box featuring a Samsung television with Lipa's face displayed on the screen. Social media posts cited in the lawsuit showed consumers were drawn to purchase the TVs because of her presence. One post read: "I wasn't even planning on buying a tv but I saw the box so I decided to get it."

In addition to damages, Lipa seeks a permanent injunction against Samsung's unauthorized use of her image. Legal experts note the "right of publicity" gives celebrities control over their commercial likeness, preventing companies from falsely implying endorsement. Samsung declined to comment on the pending litigation, which represents a significant legal battle over intellectual property rights in the entertainment industry.
