Amazon Expands Battery‑Powered Cargo Bikes in NYC

Amazon has deployed more than 300 battery‑powered cargo bikes across Manhattan and Brooklyn, replacing vans on tight streets. The dark‑blue, pedal‑assist models can hold over 100 parcels and cost far less to run. Drivers like Brandon Quizeno report smoother routes and fewer parking hassles daily.

Accelerated Flywheel Logistics, an Amazon delivery partner, operates 40 bikes out of a Lower East Side hub, running shifts from 3:15 a.m. to 11 p.m. The company says its electric vans and pushcarts still handle the rest of the 2.5 million packages delivered each day in New York, but bikes cut congestion and avoid the 60th‑Street toll.

The city’s 2024 policy allows cargo bikes to travel at 15 mph and park only on sidewalks, a rule that encourages safer, greener deliveries. In 2025, Amazon announced a Washington D.C. pilot and plans more U.S. pilots this year, signaling a shift toward low‑emission urban fleets globally.

With 64 million packages last year routed through bikes and pushcarts, Amazon’s investment in compact delivery vehicles reflects broader industry pressure to curb congestion and carbon footprints. The shift also opens new revenue streams for delivery‑service partners like Accelerated Flywheel, which now employs 155 staff on a predictable schedule.
