UK regulator MHRA approved a new 7.2 mg weekly dose of Novo Nordisk’s weight‑loss drug Wegovy for adults with obesity. The decision lifts the maximum dose from 2.4 mg to 7.2 mg, and shares rose 3 % after the announcement in the London market, investors welcomed the move today.

Patients begin at 0.25 mg weekly, increasing every four weeks until 2.4 mg. After at least four weeks on that level, prescribers may raise the dose to the new maximum, requiring three consecutive 2.4 mg injections on the same day, spaced at least 5 cm apart for proper absorption.

Semaglutide, the active ingredient, has already earned approval for type‑2 diabetes and obesity under the brand name Ozempic. Expanding the dose range could improve weight‑loss outcomes for patients with BMI ≥30 kg/m², potentially boosting Novo Nordisk’s revenue stream amid growing demand for anti‑obesity therapies worldwide.

Clinicians will monitor how patients tolerate the higher dose and whether the increased injection burden affects adherence. Market watchers expect the approval to spur further research into semaglutide’s cardiovascular benefits and to set a precedent for dose escalation in other GLP‑1 therapies across the pharmaceutical.
