Stanley Druckenmiller's Brazil ETF Bet Pays Off Before January Rally

Billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller's Duquesne Family Office made a substantial bet on Brazilian equities just before a major market surge. The firm acquired approximately 3.5 million shares of the $9.1 billion iShares MSCI Brazil ETF during the fourth quarter of 2023, positioning itself ahead of a 17% rally in January.

This strong performance marked the ETF's best monthly gain since 2020, driven by a weakening dollar and rising commodity prices. Major Brazilian companies like Petroleo Brasileiro SA saw double-digit increases, benefiting from the favorable market conditions. The rally has been concentrated in heavily traded stocks typically favored by foreign investors.

The timing appears particularly astute as Latin America's largest economy prepares for potential interest rate cuts next month. This Brazilian market strength comes amid broader emerging market gains as global investors seek diversification after years of heavy U.S. market exposure. Druckenmiller, who founded Duquesne Capital in 1981 and previously worked with George Soros, has a track record of successful market timing.
