U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has appointed two new members to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), expanding his oversight of the nation's vaccine schedule. The Department of Health and Human Services announced Friday that Dr. Sean Downing and Dr. Angelina Farella will join the federal panel, which determines clinical standards and vaccine coverage requirements.

Kennedy dismissed all 17 original ACIP members last summer, triggering intense scrutiny of the committee's restructuring. The appointments come as the panel faces mounting legal challenges, with 15 states and medical associations filing lawsuits questioning whether Kennedy's actions fall within his legal authority. These disputes have already forced the postponement of a February meeting.

The committee's recommendations directly impact pharmaceutical companies' revenue streams by dictating which vaccines private insurers and government programs must cover. For investors in biotech and pharma sectors, the outcome of upcoming meetings could significantly shift demand for immunization products. The panel is now scheduled to reconvene in mid-March to discuss sensitive topics including COVID-19 vaccine injuries and long COVID.
