Mitchells & Butlers reported robust first quarter results, posting 4.5% like-for-like sales growth for the 15 weeks ended January 10. The pub and restaurant operator outperformed the market across all segments, with the festive period driving exceptional results. Sales strengthened throughout the quarter, rising to 5.2% in the final seven weeks, signaling strong consumer momentum.

The company's brands, including Harvester and Toby Carvery, saw food sales outpace drinks, growing 5.1% versus 3.8%. Chief Executive Phil Urban credited the success to the company's diverse portfolio and prime estate locations. However, management still faces £130 million in cost headwinds from increased labor expenses and food inflation this financial year.

Management remains focused on tackling these industry-wide cost pressures through its Ignite programme and capital investments. The operator completed 51 conversions and remodels year-to-date, aiming to drive both cost efficiencies and increased sales. Investors will watch how effectively these strategies shield margins while sustaining the strong market share gains achieved over the holidays.
