India-US Trade Deal Faces Uncertainty After SCOTUS Ruling

India's trade landscape faces uncertainty after the US Supreme Court struck down President Trump's tariff regime. Led by Jairam Ramesh, the Indian opposition demands Prime Minister Narendra Modi pause the current Indo-US trade framework, arguing the legal shift in Washington necessitates complete renegotiation of existing agreements.

India had secured tariff reductions to 18% (from 25%) under the previous interim deal. With Trump now implementing a universal 10% global tariff, the specialized advantage India negotiated has largely disappeared. Ajay Sahai of the Federation of Indian Export Organizations confirms the specialized deal is functionally obsolete despite the return to a level playing field.

As trade tensions persist, Modi is pivoting to technology as India's primary growth engine. The Prime Minister recently positioned India as the world's hub for "affordable AI," leveraging the nation's software talent and vast datasets to provide cost-effective AI solutions compared to Western competitors. This strategic shift aims to attract investment amid traditional trade uncertainty.
