Peak waiting times at major European airports have doubled this summer following the EU’s rollout of its new electronic border system, according to data obtained by the FT. In Frankfurt, maximum queue times reached 120 minutes in July, up from 60 minutes a year prior. Similarly, Munich and Amsterdam saw peak delays rise significantly.

The EU implemented its Entry Exit System (EES) to improve border security, requiring non-EU passengers to register fingerprints and personal information. However, the travel industry warned of bottlenecks. Ryanair’s chief executive Michael O’Leary criticized the system as "mis-designed," noting significant queues at approximately 15 airports.
