China Vanke Seeks Extended Grace Period for Bond

China Vanke, a major property developer, is pushing to extend the grace period for a 2 billion yuan ($290 million) bond repayment by an additional 90 trading days. The bond, which matured on December 15, initially received a 30-day grace period with a repayment deadline set for January 27. Vanke's new proposal aims to push this deadline to April 29, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Vanke's Hong Kong shares reacted positively, rising 1.8% following the report. The embattled developer is under pressure to renegotiate its extensive debt load, grappling with years of sluggish sales and weak capital reserves. Any missed payments could trigger the largest default yet in China's struggling property sector.

This move echoes a pattern established by Vanke in late-2025, when it sought repayment extensions on several bonds. Analysts expect Vanke to follow a similar path as other troubled developers, seeking multiple short-term extensions before proposing a broader debt restructuring. This strategy has become common among distressed Chinese developers as they navigate challenging market conditions.
