Canada’s retail sector posted a 1.3% rise in November, pushing total receipts to $70.4 billion, according to Statistics Canada. Growth spanned most categories, with core retail (excluding auto and fuel) up 1.6%. The food and beverage segment led, jumping 3.0% as British Columbia liquor stores resumed normal operations after labor disruptions.

Discretionary spending also rebounded; clothing and accessory retailers posted a 2.4% gain after two months of decline, while building‑material and garden‑equipment dealers recorded their second consecutive monthly increase. Analysts at CIBC, citing senior economist Andrew Grantham, view the November surge as a brief release of pent‑up demand rather than a lasting shift.

Preliminary December data show a 0.5% dip, suggesting the holiday shopping season lacked momentum. Investors will watch whether the downturn deepens, potentially pressuring retailers with thin margins. Future releases from Statistics Canada will clarify if the decline is isolated or signals a broader sideways trend that began in early 2025.
