BofA Bets on NZD Short Amid Oil Surge

Bank of America strategists recommend shorting the New Zealand dollar as oil prices rise and equities fall following Middle East tensions. The bank sees high-beta currencies like the NZD underperforming in this environment, with the kiwi particularly vulnerable due to structural weaknesses.

BofA highlights New Zealand's growing dependence on imported energy, noting domestic oil production has dropped sharply over the past decade. The 2022 closure of the Marsden Point refinery left the country reliant on imported refined fuels, with diesel accounting for roughly half of oil consumption. The country's large current-account deficit and high beta to risk further pressure the currency.

While BofA views short NZD as a tactical hedge, strategists warn the trade depends heavily on risk sentiment. Past geopolitical shocks have seen equity sell-offs prove short-lived, with the NZD even appreciating around 2% after major oil spikes in 2022 and 2003 when rising equities offset the oil shock.
