Barclays Downgrades TF1 Stock on Middle East Tensions

Barclays downgraded Television Francaise 1 SA to Underweight from Equal Weight, citing escalating Middle East tensions and weakening French television advertising trends. The French broadcaster's shares slipped 1% in Paris trading following the downgrade. Analysts warned that geopolitical uncertainty and slower economic growth could disproportionately impact advertising-dependent companies like broadcasters.

Barclays analyst Julien Roch noted that heightened geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainty poses particular risks for cyclical media companies tied to advertising demand. The bank reduced its price target for TF1 to €7 from €9 and lowered earnings forecasts, now expecting adjusted earnings per share of €0.68 for 2026 and €0.80 for 2027. These revisions reflect weaker advertising growth assumptions and adjustments related to TF1's production arm Newen.

The downgrade reflects Barclays' view that broadcasters remain vulnerable in the current environment, particularly those that haven't already experienced significant share price declines. The bank's analysts described the move as a relative call within the sector, favoring more defensive media names over cyclical businesses. TF1's exposure to the French advertising market and lack of recent de-rating make it especially susceptible to the current macroeconomic headwinds.
