Wildfires near France's Arcachon basin are threatening the region's oyster industry, a vital part of its economy. Evacuations have prevented farmers from accessing their oyster beds, shutting down lucrative tasting cabins and jeopardizing stocks during the peak summer season. Growers on the Cap Ferret peninsula have been unable to work normally since authorities ordered evacuations as flames spread through pine forests.

Alexandra Teixeira of the regional industry body, Comité Régional de la Conchyliculture Arcachon Aquitaine, stated that approximately half of the region's oyster farmers have been affected. While oysters in tidal beds are not directly exposed, producers require regular access for maintenance, harvesting, and processing. The fires also pose a risk of ash and soil runoff into coastal waters, potentially impacting water quality.

Some farmers, like Xavier Blanquine, have remained on the peninsula despite evacuation orders to protect their stock. This disruption is particularly damaging as the period accounts for a significant portion of annual turnover. The financial impact is substantial, with businesses facing severe losses and uncertainty about insurance coverage. The industry has also endured recent setbacks, including oyster mortalities and sanitary closures, making these fires a "final straw" for many, according to Olivier Laban, president of the regional shellfish committee.
