President Donald Trump has imposed sweeping new tariffs on drones and their components to reduce U.S. reliance on Chinese drone technology. The White House announced 100% tariffs on drones deemed particularly sensitive for national security, including those weighing more than 25kg or equipped with thermal imaging. A 25% tariff applies to drones with a maximum take-off weight under 25kg.

This move follows a December Federal Communications Commission ban on Chinese drone imports. Experts say the tariffs will force U.S. commercial and government customers to pivot toward domestic or allied suppliers, even at higher costs. The order also targets over 40 countries accused of helping China evade tariffs.

Drones from allies like Japan, South Korea, and the EU face lower tariffs of 15%, while UK tech is taxed at 10%. The Commerce Department is authorized to create an onshoring program to support new domestic drone investments. The policy underscores growing concerns over drone warfare, highlighted by Ukraine's use of UAVs against Russia.

The action comes as Xi Jinping is expected to visit Washington for a summit with Trump in six weeks.
