OpenAI Foundation Commits $250M to Study AI's Economic Impact on Jobs

OpenAI's foundation announced plans to grant $250mn toward researching artificial intelligence's economic effects, marking its first major initiative since separating from the commercial business last year. The charitable arm aims to study employment shifts, wage changes, and firm behavior as AI adoption accelerates across industries.

Divya Siddarth, who co-leads the foundation's work with OpenAI co-founder Wojciech Zaremba, said the organization operates from the assumption that AI will massively reshape the economy in unpredictable ways. The foundation will initially measure AI's economic impact before focusing on worker adaptation and broad economic security measures.

This $250mn commitment stems from a broader $25bn pledge to mitigate AI's negative impacts while leveraging the technology for societal benefit. The foundation controls 26% of OpenAI's business arm, valued at over $200bn following the company's $852bn valuation. Critics like Elon Musk have questioned whether the organization has abandoned its charitable mission.

Sam Altman defended the structure, emphasizing the foundation maintains ultimate control through its power to hire and fire business directors. The initiative represents one of the largest nonprofit commitments to AI governance research.
