OpenAI has launched its OpenAI Foundation with a $1 billion commitment to deploy AI for humanity's benefit. The foundation will focus on life sciences, curing diseases, economic impact, AI resilience, and community programs. This follows OpenAI's recapitalization last fall, which provided the resources needed to scale these initiatives.

In life sciences, the foundation is targeting Alzheimer's research, public health data access, and high-burden diseases. Jacob Trefethen, formerly of Coefficient Giving, leads this effort, which includes partnerships with research institutions to map disease pathways and accelerate treatment development. The foundation also plans to invest in open datasets to enable AI-driven medical breakthroughs.

Wojciech Zaremba, an OpenAI co-founder, heads AI resilience initiatives addressing children's safety, biosecurity, and model safety. The foundation is building a leadership team including Anna Makanju as Head of AI for Civil Society and Philanthropy, and Robert Kaiden as CFO. With additional hires planned, OpenAI aims to scale its mission of ensuring artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity through practical applications and community support.
