NHS Explores Ending Palantir Data Contract Amid Controversy

UK ministers are exploring whether to trigger a break clause in Palantir's £330 million NHS contract amid growing political pressure over the American company's role in managing sensitive health data. The seven-year deal awarded in 2023 tasked Palantir with building a Federated Data Platform to collate waiting lists and patient information across England.

Government officials have begun assessing the technical feasibility of removing Palantir from NHS systems before the 2027 break clause deadline. While officials stress this assessment isn't prompted by specific dissatisfaction, MPs, NHS staff, and medical unions have questioned Palantir's suitability given its US defense ties and CEO Alex Karp's political positions. The Treasury's National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority projects the programme's total cost will exceed £1 billion.

Only 123 of 205 hospital trusts are currently using the platform, with implementation varying widely. Some larger hospitals report Palantir's software offers little beyond their existing systems, while others praise its capabilities. Palantir claims its platform has delivered 110,000 additional operations and a 15% reduction in discharge delays. The Department of Health maintains the platform is helping join up patient care with strict data security requirements in place.
