Kraken Gains Fed Payment Access: Crypto's Wall Street Moment

The Federal Reserve has granted Kraken access to its core payments systems, marking the first time a cryptocurrency exchange has been allowed direct connection to the central bank's infrastructure. The Wyoming-based digital assets firm will now be able to use Fedwire for real-time dollar transfers on behalf of institutional clients.

This decision represents a watershed moment for the crypto industry, placing Kraken on equal footing with major banks and credit unions. The Kansas City Fed approved a one-year limited purpose account, acknowledging both the evolving payments landscape and the attendant risks. Banking industry groups had previously warned that crypto firms' access to central bank systems could threaten financial stability.

The move comes as the Trump administration pushes for greater integration between digital assets and traditional finance. Kraken has cultivated strong ties with Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis, a vocal crypto advocate who helped secure the state's special purpose depository institution charter for the exchange. The company relocated to Wyoming in 2025 and recently announced plans to sponsor tax-advantaged investment accounts for children as part of Trump's broader financial inclusion agenda.
