JesStaley Trustee Role Contradicts Barclays Tenure Amid Epstein Scandal

Jes Staley was named a trustee of Jeffrey Epstein's 2014 trust and entitled to $250,000 annually, newly released documents show, directly contradicting his sworn testimony that he declined the role, according to a Financial Times report.

Staley, who became Barclays' CEO in October 2015, was one of three trustees named in a May 2015 notarised agreement alongside Epstein's lawyer Darren Indyke and property investor David Mitchell. Trustees were entitled to annual pay of $250,000 plus expenses, though it's unclear if Staley received compensation. This revelation undermines Staley's court claim that he rejected Epstein's request to be named a trustee, a move he said was necessary to overturn a Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) lifetime ban over his ties to the disgraced financier.

Staley maintained a "close professional relationship" with Epstein until late 2015, exchanging over a thousand emails. The documents, part of a DOJ release, also show Staley was appointed an executor in earlier versions of Epstein's will, alongside Lawrence Summers. Epstein died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges, forcing a reckoning for many connected to him. Staley has denied knowing about Epstein's "monstrous activities" during their relationship. The Upper Tribunal recently upheld the FCA's decision that Staley had recklessly misled them.
