High Court Nixes Most Dieselgate Claims

On Friday the High Court in London rejected the bulk of a multibillion‑pound lawsuit brought by 1.6 million UK motorists against major automakers, including Mercedes‑Benz, Ford, Peugeot/Citroën, Renault, and Nissan. The case aimed to broaden liability beyond Volkswagen’s 2015 scandal.

Lady Justice Sara Cockerill ruled that the majority of the manufacturers’ strategies did not qualify as prohibited defeat devices. The judgment, however, left room for damages where specific tactics were found adverse, signalling that not all exposure is eliminated.

The ruling eases immediate financial risk but signals that regulators and insurers may still pursue claims. The sector faces rising compliance costs, potential reputational damage, and a shift in how emissions software is audited. Insurers could raise premiums, and firms that rely on legacy diesel engines risk future penalties.

Investors should track regulatory changes and litigation costs. Companies that have already invested in cleaner diesel technology may see a reprieve, while those still dependent on older engines could face increased scrutiny and higher insurance costs.
