CEO's $900k Furniture Discount Sparks Outrage

John Reed, CEO of Arhaus, received $904,099 in merchandise discounts last year, making up nearly a fifth of his $4.6 million total compensation. This figure represents a dramatic increase from the $310,265 in discounts he received over the previous three years combined.

Reed's discount package has raised eyebrows because it exceeds his private jet compensation of $828,000. The furniture retailer, with a market cap of about $1 billion, pays its CEO roughly a third less than the average FTSE 100 CEO. The company's proxy filing reveals the discount as part of Reed's "other compensation" for 2025.

Calculating the actual value of furniture purchased proves challenging due to unclear discount structures. If Reed received a 50% discount on top of the standard 30%, he would have needed to buy approximately $1.8 million worth of furniture. At a 20% additional discount, the figure jumps to $4.5 million. With Arhaus remaining silent on the specifics, the only certainty is that Reed acquired at least seven figures worth of his own company's products last year.
