Frasers Group buys Harvey Nichols for £40mn

Mike Ashley's Frasers Group has snapped up the iconic Harvey Nichols department store for about £40mn in a pre‑pack administration, a fraction of the £130mn Sir Dickson Poon paid 35 years ago. The deal underscores Ashley’s knack for bargain hunting, even as his reputation shifts from discount sportswear to upmarket retail.

Under the “elevation” strategy led by CEO Michael Murray, Frasers now operates roughly 100 luxury outlets, including the Flannels chain, and holds partnerships with brands such as Moncler, Gucci and Burberry. The group’s market value has risen to £3.6bn, reflecting a deliberate move upmarket.

Yet Frasers also behaves like a corporate hedge fund, building stakes in Mulberry, Boohoo and a 48% holding in Hugo Boss after a €2.7bn bid. Investors find the structure opaque; Next, by contrast, commands a £18bn valuation through steady growth. Ashley’s next move—whether to take Frasers private or keep expanding—remains unpredictable.
