China's CATL, the world's largest EV battery maker, is expanding beyond automotive applications into powering AI data centers, electricity grids, and ships. The company is conducting advanced testing on new battery systems designed for 24/7 operation under demanding conditions.

CATL's ambition, led by founder Robin Zeng, is to leverage its dominance in EV batteries, which accounted for about three-quarters of its $61.4bn in sales last year, to foster and lead new battery-powered industries. This strategic shift includes significant investments in research and development, such as the Xiamen laboratory, and expanding its market share in energy storage systems, already reaching approximately 30%.

Recent investments highlight CATL's focus on sectors driven by AI, renewable energy, and electrification. The company has deployed batteries on nearly 1,000 vessels and is investing billions in infrastructure like battery swapping stations. With strong revenue growth and increasing importance in global energy systems, CATL is navigating geopolitical scrutiny while solidifying its position as a high-tech energy company.
