BlackBerry’s Tech Comeback

BlackBerry, once the king of mobile phones, fell behind after the iPhone and touch‑screen smartphones stole the market.

In 2026 the company posted a positive cash position for the first time since 2017, signalling financial stability. The turnaround hinges on its software, especially the car125 operating system QNX and the encryption firm Secusmart.

These platforms now account for about half of BlackBerry’s revenue and are used in cars, robotics, medical devices, and defence, providing Nato‑grade secure voice and messaging to 20 governments.

Despite being a shadow of its $83bn peak, BlackBerry’s shares have jumped 150% over the past year, giving it a market cap of roughly $5.2bn and a renewed reputation as a tech champion.
