US-Sanctioned Tanker Defies Strait Blockade

A US-sanctioned gas tanker, the Danuta I, successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz on Friday despite heightened tensions and a near-complete halt in maritime traffic. The vessel, flagged by Palau and operated by Panama-based Ithaki Maritime and Trading, had been blacklisted for handling Iranian liquefied petroleum gas. The ship's transponder signals were inconsistent during its transit, suggesting deliberate attempts to obscure its route.

The Strait of Hormuz has become increasingly dangerous for commercial vessels, with dozens of tankers stranded in the Persian Gulf. Signal jamming, rampant in the region, may have contributed to the Danuta I's erratic tracking. Charlie Brown, an advisor to United Against Nuclear Iran, noted that legitimate shipowners are avoiding the strait due to safety concerns and commercial risks, leaving the path open for sanctioned vessels.

Traffic through the strategic waterway has ground to a near-complete halt, according to the Bahrain-based Joint Maritime Information Center. The Danuta I's successful passage may embolden other dark fleet tankers to attempt the crossing, potentially after coordinating with Iranian forces. The vessel's owner lacks any online presence or known contact methods, raising questions about the opacity of such operations in the region.
