US-India Trade Deal: No China-Style Economic Boost

The United States will not grant India the same economic advantages that fueled China's rise as a global competitor, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau warned Thursday. Speaking at India's flagship Raisina Dialogue, Landau emphasized Washington's intention to avoid repeating past mistakes while pursuing a trade deal with New Delhi.

Landau's comments came as India finalizes negotiations under President Trump's administration, following recent US tariff cuts on Indian goods from 50% to 18%. The US official also offered cooperation on India's energy challenges amid Middle East supply disruptions, signaling continued engagement despite Washington's cautious approach. India has maintained neutrality in regional conflicts while seeking to diversify trade partnerships.

The warning reflects broader US concerns about India's economic trajectory as both nations negotiate terms. With India signing trade agreements with the European Union and other partners, Washington appears determined to prevent another economic rival from emerging while still pursuing mutually beneficial cooperation.
