UK Deploys HMS Dragon to Hormuz for Escrow Mission

The UK has moved the Type‑45 destroyer HMS Dragon to the Middle East as part of a plan for a European‑led mission to escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz once a ceasefire holds. The warship, recently finished weapons tests off Crete, will serve as a deterrent while the coalition, led by Britain and France, prepares for deployment.

The move follows Iran’s recent proposal to the United States for a war‑ending deal after ten weeks of hostilities that have shut the strait, a channel that carries about 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas. More than 40 nations are refining the mission’s scope, which will include de‑mining, escorting and air policing under a multinational umbrella.

France has already relocated its Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier to the Red Sea, signalling readiness to secure the waterway. The UK‑France coalition intends to activate the escort mission only once a durable ceasefire or peace agreement is in place, ensuring that commercial traffic can resume safely and that energy markets remain stable.

Deploying HMS Dragon signals the UK’s commitment to protect maritime commerce amid geopolitical tensions that could ripple through global supply chains. Investors in shipping, energy, and defense sectors will monitor the coalition’s readiness, as any escalation could inflate freight costs and prompt re‑routing of oil shipments, potentially shifting regional economic dynamics and affecting valuations of naval contractors.
