SK Battery America announced it is laying off 958 workers at its Commerce, Georgia plant, representing 37% of its 2,566-person workforce. The South Korean battery manufacturer cited the need to align operations with current market conditions as electric vehicle sales slow. This marks a significant reduction for the facility that once supplied cells for Ford's canceled F-150 Lightning.

SK Innovation's battery division has been navigating challenging market conditions, with the Commerce plant also supplying Volkswagen and Hyundai. The company stated it remains committed to Georgia and building a robust US supply chain for advanced battery manufacturing. SK Battery America is now pursuing new customers in both automotive and stationary storage sectors as it adjusts to the evolving EV landscape.

The layoffs reflect broader industry challenges, including the end of US federal tax credits for EV buyers and policy shifts under the Trump administration. SK Innovation reported that the loss of these subsidies impacted fourth-quarter 2025 profitability despite increased shipments to Europe. The company's second Georgia plant, set to supply Hyundai, is expected to begin production in early 2026, while its Tennessee facility faces delays until 2028.
