Half of England, including all of London, has been declared to be in "flash drought" following consecutive heatwaves and low rainfall. The Environment Agency confirmed that large parts of central, eastern, and southern England are now facing drought conditions, impacting millions with hosepipe bans.

This marks the third drought in England in five years, with Helen Wakeham of the Environment Agency emphasizing the "exceptionally serious situation" and its "long-lasting impacts." Devon has experienced over 50 days without significant rainfall. The country endured its hottest June on record and a prolonged July heatwave, with a fourth heatwave currently underway.

Seven water companies have implemented temporary hosepipe bans for approximately 40% of England's population. River levels are critically low, with 78% classified as below normal, affecting migratory fish. Farmers are facing early harvests and reduced yields. Water minister Emma Hardy stressed the need for preparedness for "this new normal" and urged water companies to "go further and faster to reduce leaks."
