Peterffy sees sports betting as key to IBKR’s prediction market push

In a recent Bloomberg Markets podcast, Interactive Brokers founder Thomas Peterffy dissected the firm’s foray into prediction markets. He noted that the sector is currently dominated by Polymarket and Kalshi, platforms where users trade contracts on outcomes ranging from elections and economic indicators to pop‑culture events like the next Big Brother winner, and attracting attention from hedge funds and sportsbooks alike today.

Peterffy argued that, while novelty bets generate buzz, sports betting currently captures the bulk of liquidity. Betting lines on major leagues funnel millions, dwarfing the modest flow from political or economic contracts. He suggested that institutional traders could eventually use these venues to hedge macro risks, turning a fringe hobby into a mainstream risk‑management tool for banks and asset managers.

For Interactive Brokers, embracing prediction markets could diversify revenue beyond traditional commissions. By offering API access and deep order‑book data, the firm positions itself to capture trading fees as volumes rise. Investors should watch whether IBKR can scale the product suite fast enough to monetize the $‑heavy sports segment before competitors replicate the model and secure a new growth pillar.
