PBOC Sets Weaker Yuan Fix to Slow Currency Gains

China's central bank signaled a desire for slower currency gains after the yuan reached its strongest level against the dollar in over three years. The PBOC set the daily yuan reference rate at 6.7905 per U.S. dollar, slightly weaker than the previous fix of 6.7873.

The daily fixing serves as a midpoint for a 2 percent trading band and is closely watched as a signal of Beijing's currency policy stance. Strategists at OCBC interpret the weaker fix as reflecting mild depreciation pressure but see broader guidance as a deliberate, controlled approach rather than rapid revaluation.

Chinese policymakers prefer gradual, two-way movement to bolster market confidence and avoid disruptive capital flows. This measured strategy aims to manage external pressures, support the domestic economic agenda, and provide stability for international businesses and investors.

A managed yuan influences trade balances, export competitiveness, investment flows into yuan-denominated assets, and regional currencies. The policy comes amid fluctuating U.S. interest rates and geopolitical tensions, making the PBOC's daily fix an important benchmark for pricing Chinese assets and managing currency risk.
