Fourteen infants were killed in a fire at one of the largest hospitals in Pakistan’s capital early Wednesday, prompting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to order an investigation. The blaze broke out in a wing housing infants at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, or PIMS, according to a statement from the prime minister’s office. PIMS is a state-run medical facility where former Prime Minister Imran Khan was taken for a health check up last week.

Workers were seen removing shards of broken windows following the fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad. The incident has drawn national attention to safety conditions in public healthcare facilities. Authorities have launched a probe into the cause of the fire, with officials emphasizing accountability.

The tragedy underscores ongoing challenges in Pakistan’s healthcare infrastructure, particularly in neonatal care units. PIMS remains a critical referral center for the region, serving thousands of patients annually.
