A leading ally of Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni endorsed a tax on windfall energy profits as the government prepares to extend measures to cushion the effect of the Iran war.

"It would be a good thing if resources can be found to help the national economy and struggling families and businesses through dialogue with those that for varying reasons have enjoyed particularly good results," Marco Osnato, a member of parliament and the head of Brothers of Italy's economic department, said in an interview on Tuesday. "I think that will be discussed during the budget."
